HALL OF LEADERS
Hall of leaders - Inaugural class of 2024
Julian P. Van Winkle, III (BRS Class of ’69) is a 3rd generation bourbon producer from Louisville, KY. His brand of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon is one of the most sought after bottles on the market. Among a great many other awards, Mr. Van Winkle has been honored with the prestigious James Beard award for outstanding Wine and Spirits.
William E. Massey, Jr. (BRS Class of ’70) entered the family business in the coal industry as a young man and had the opportunity to get to know the hardworking people of Appalachia firsthand. Seeing the difficulties presented to them by the downturn of the coal industry, he was driven to create charitable organizations supporting entrepreneurial efforts and the health of the workforce, striving to attract new industry to Appalachia.
Jay Jessup (BRS Class of ’69) spent 8 years as a professional musician before joining his family business as the President of Pepsi-Cola of Central Virginia. A central figure in the Charlottesville community, he’s served on numerous boards raising money for community initiatives and supporting local business. He was also the first BRS alumnus to serve as chair of the board of trustees, and has been involved with our school at every level.
Hatcher Williams (Headmaster, 1963-1984) is a truly a giant among the BRS pantheon of forefathers. He can be credited with much of the philosophy that our school still proudly displays. Hatcher believed in boys, and spent his life creating an environment in which they could thrive. We are humbly indebted to Mr. Williams and honor his memory. His daughter, Margaret McFarland, accepted on his behalf.
The Hall of Leaders honors the cumulative, complete service and achievement that only a special few can achieve.
Where other awards are designed to honor particular types of service, Hall of Leaders honorees will distinguish themselves more broadly and over a period of sustained support and leadership. Having been honored with another of BRS’s awards does not exclude one from the Hall of Leaders. In fact, many members will likely have been honored with another BRS Award before being inducted.
The Hall of Leaders honors individuals who:
- Are highly accomplished in their fields and communities.
- Have shared their achievements with the School through leadership, advocacy, and philanthropic support.
- May have helped bring their own sons, grandsons, and other family to the School.
- Are loyal to BRS and its mission at all times.
- Leader in their business fields and active in their communities.
