On Sunday, October 9, Jared Brown ‘17, Spencer Cook ‘17, and Tony Jin ‘20 rode the Virginia Capital Trail with Mr. Cory Woods.  The 52-mile bike path connects the current and historical capitals of Virginia.  This group of students had been preparing to do the 100-mile Tour de Greene bike ride on Saturday, but could not because of the weather.  “So, we decided to check off a century ride on Sunday by completing an out-and-back on the Capital Trail,” explains Cory.

The Virginia Capital Trail Foundation (VCTF) is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to enhance, promote, manage and advocate for the continued development of the Virginia Capital Trail, a 52-mile dedicated multi-use trail connecting Richmond and Williamsburg along the historic and beautiful Route 5 corridor.

Planning for the trail began in 1991 when the Virginia Department of Transportation recommended including bike lanes on Route 5 to preserve the scenic character of the route. Over the next few years, through the combined efforts of state and federal entities and the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, funds were raised and the bike route constructed.  Finally, in October 2015, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe delivered the keynote address and cut the ribbon at the opening of the entire Virginia Capital Trail.
