On November 19, 2016, the Blue Ridge School varsity football team beat North Cross 41-14 on their home turf. The win by Blue Ridge avenged a victory North Cross earned over the Barons during the regular season. More importantly, it gave the Barons a state championship. Both teams had to deal with strong winds that affected each team’s game.
Quarterback Justin Armwood had a touchdown pass and reception, and linebacker Tariq Gough had two defensive scores helping to the team to earn the VISAA Division II state championship.
The Barons scored first with an interception by Tariq who ran untouched 55 yards to make the score 6-0 just over a minute into the contest.
The Raiders scored next when the wind threw the Barons’ punt straight up and back to the 12 yard line, where the Raiders picked it up making the score 7-6.
With just seconds before the end of the half, with Raiders ahead by 1 (14-13), Justin Armwood threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Josh Colon putting the Barons at 20-14.
In the third quarter, Tariq Gough picked up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, making the score 28-14. Justin Armwood scored with a pass from Jamison Harrison (35-14).
This is the third state championship for the BRS football program. The first in 1994 and the second in 2012.
