VAIS Outdoor Workshop

BRS welcomed educators to the 2018 VAIS Outdoor & Experiential Educators Network Workshop held at Blue Ridge School on Wednesday, February 21. The workshop is part of the Outdoor & Experiential Educators Network, created six years ago by Lynda Hoag of Flint Hill to encourage collaboration among experiential teachers in Virginia, Maryland and DC. The network aims to spread the positive impact experiential programs have on students of all ages. This annual workshop allows educators to share experiences, offer advice on matters of fund-raising, marketing, or building new programs.

This year’s speakers included Carolyn Schuyler of Wildrock, Cary Jamieson of Steward School, Brett Mayer of Episcopal High School, Will Smiley of Christchurch School. BRS speakers included Associate Headmaster Franklin Daniels and Assistant Outdoor Program Director Cory Woods. Outdoor Program Director Tony Brown introduced our panel of students: Ballard Earley ’18, Ty Ewen ’18, Selby Morgan ’19, Jack Cline ’18 and Wai Kwan Ng ’19 who spoke about their outdoor experiences at BRS. Alex Dillard ’19 conducted one of the breakout sessions on “What’s In Your First Aid Kit.” For a video of the student panel, click here.
