Wrestling Team Visits BRS Championship Coach

Members of Baron Wrestling hit the road not for their next match, but to visit with Hall of Fame wrestling coach Dick Glover. Glover coached wrestling at Blue Ridge School during the 1970s and led the team to its only national championship in 1975.

Glover retired from teaching and coaching in 2003 and lives in Central Virginia. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003 for his lifetime service to the sport. He is also a member of Wabash College’s Athletic Hall of Fame, the eponym of the Virginia Wrestling Association’s lifetime achievement award, and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Coach Glover is well known for his inspirational speeches to his athletes and for his perspectives on coaching. He would tell his athletes: “You are not ennobled by victory in an athletic contest, nor are you denigrated by defeat. Rather, it is how you prepare, how you compete, and perhaps most importantly, how you react to victory or defeat, which is the true indication of your character.”

He imparted this wisdom to the current Blue Ridge School wrestling team, just as he did for Barons more than 40 years ago.
